End Of The K Question Merz And Soeder Invite To Press Conference On The Cdu Leadership Issue

End of the K-Question? Merz and Söder invite to press conference on the CDU leadership issue

Söder wants to announce his decision today

Merz and Söder want to hold a joint press conference on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in Berlin.

The Union's K-question could be decided this Tuesday: According to information from the German Press Agency, CSU boss Markus Söder and CDU boss Friedrich Merz want to hold a joint press conference in Berlin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. According to information from the dpa, Söder wants to announce his decision on the candidacy for the CDU chairmanship at the press conference.

So far, only Merz has officially declared his candidacy for the CDU chairmanship. However, Söder had repeatedly left open whether he wanted to run against Merz. Most recently, Söder had said that he wanted to make a decision "in the next few days".

If Söder were to run for the CDU chairmanship, it would be a surprise. So far, it was considered rather unlikely that Söder would give up his post as Bavarian Prime Minister for the CDU chairmanship. However, Söder had repeatedly emphasized that he was interested in the CDU chairmanship. He had also said that he wanted to prevent a "leftward drift" of the CDU.

The CDU wants to elect a new chairman at a party conference on January 21 and 22. In addition to Merz, former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) is also considered a possible candidate.
