Stephen Peat, Ex-Capitals Forward, Dies at 44

Stephen Peat, a former Washington Capitals player and promising coaching prospect, passed away unexpectedly at age 44

Stephen Peat, an ex-Capitals forward who was recently hired as the head coach of the ECHL’s Maine Mariners, has sadly passed away at the age of 44. Peat’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Peat played 6 NHL seasons, scoring 14 goals and 25 assists

Peat played in 151 games over six seasons in the NHL, recording 14 goals and 25 assists. He spent the majority of his career with the Capitals, but he also had stints with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the New York Rangers.

Peat was a member of the Capitals team that won the Presidents Trophy in 1999-2000.

Peat was a respected coach

After retiring from playing, Peat began his coaching career as an assistant with the Hershey Bears of the AHL. He was hired as the head coach of the Maine Mariners in June 2023.

The Mariners released a statement expressing their sorrow over Peat’s passing.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Stephen Peat,” the statement read. “Stephen was a dedicated and passionate coach who was committed to the development of our players and staff. He will be greatly missed.”

Peat is survived by his wife and two children.
