F1 News: Ricciardo Left Clueless Over Surprise Singapore Pace
McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo was left scratching his head after a surprise surge in pace during the Singapore Grand Prix qualifying session saw him qualify in ninth, his best qualifying result since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in June.
Ricciardo felt like he struggled for pace all weekend, but a number of factors combined to give him a strong qualifying result, including the wet conditions and a setup change that seemed to suit the McLaren MCL36 in the slippery conditions.
Ricciardo admitted that he was surprised by the car's pace, and that he didn't expect to be so competitive.
He said: "I don't know where that came from. We've been struggling all weekend, but somehow we found some pace in qualifying. It was a bit of a surprise, but I'll take it.
Ricciardo's teammate Lando Norris will start the race in 12th position, after a difficult qualifying session.
The team will be hoping that Ricciardo can convert his strong qualifying performance into a points finish in the race.
