EU Border Agency Frontex Faces Calls to Be Abolished
Movement Gathers Momentum
Paris, France
WEB Abolish Frontex, a movement calling for the end of the European Union's (EU) border agency Frontex, is gaining momentum. Frontex, tasked with enforcing the EU's border regime, has faced criticism for its militarized policies and alleged human rights abuses.
The movement, a decentralized network of groups, organizations, and individuals, demands the dismantling of Frontex and the EU's border security and control policies. Amidst growing concerns about the agency's budget and expansion plans, WEB Abolish Frontex has called for a shift towards more humane and equitable migration policies.
Frontex recently secured a €56 billion budget until 2027, which includes funding for a standing force of 10,000 border guards. Critics argue that this expansion will further militarize the EU's borders and exacerbate the suffering of migrants trying to reach Europe.
WEB Abolish Frontex points to the deaths of over 44,000 people attempting to cross EU borders since 2014 as evidence of the failures of the current system. The movement advocates for safe and legal pathways for migration, as well as an end to the policies that force people to risk their lives to seek asylum or economic opportunities.
