John Sterling Retirement

John Sterling Set to Retire As Voice of New York Yankees Radio Broadcasts

Legendary Broadcaster to Announce Retirement Saturday

Retirement Effective Immediately

Veteran New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling will retire from his longtime position after 35 years, the club announced Monday. The announcement, first reported by The Athletics Andrew Marchand, comes as the Yankees enjoy a hot start to the 2023 season.

Sterling, 85, is expected to make a formal retirement announcement at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. The move will mark the end of an era for the Bronx Bombers, as Sterling has been a fixture in the radio booth throughout some of the most memorable moments in Yankees history.

Sterling joined the Yankees broadcast team in 1989 after a successful career as a sportscaster in Baltimore and Boston. He quickly became known for his energetic and enthusiastic style, as well as his signature home run calls, including "It is high, it is far, it is gone!"

In addition to his work in the Yankees booth, Sterling has also called play-by-play for ESPN, the NFL, and college football and basketball.

Sterling's retirement will create a void in the Yankees broadcast booth, but the legendary broadcaster will undoubtedly receive a warm send-off from the team and its fans.
